10 Tips to Create More Free Time

You will never "find" time for anything. If you want time, you must make it.
Charles Bruxton

How many times have you said if I can just add more hours to my day? How many times have you skipped something you wanted to do because you ran out of time? Why is it you just don’t seem to have any time for yourself?

Most of us will say we don’t have the time, but the truth is we all have the same amount of time in a day. The difference is how we manage our day. Some of us make time for doing what we enjoy doing, while others allow the demands and responsibilities of each day to run their days and even weeks.

You can have the time for the things you enjoy doing and take control of your time once again. It is not difficult, it just takes a little effort. The tips below will help you create more free time:

1.     Stop & Reflect. Take some time by yourself at a place you enjoy, can even be at home. Really take a look at your life, how do you view your life right at this moment. What are you missing that you enjoy doing because you do not have the time? What takes up your time each day? Can you stop doing certain things to make more time in your day? If you don’t take the time to figure out what makes you happy and how to make the time for things you enjoy then you will not be able to add free time to your day. It starts with knowing what you want and making a plan to get there.

2. What do you enjoy doing? As you are thinking about everything in number 1, start making a list. Make a list of no more than 5 things that you wish you had more time for. These can be anything that you want to start to make the time for.

3.     What is wasting your time? Now make a list of things that you do on a daily or weekly basis. Really look at this list to determine whether everything on the list is necessary. Also determine if there is a way to minimize the time you spend on these things and if you can eventually eliminate a couple of these. If you truly give it some thought, you will be able to figure out your time wasters. For example, do you spend time chatting or playing games on Facebook or watching TV, or talking on the phone for an hour at a time about nothing important? These are all things that are time wasters that you can reduce the amount of time on these or eliminate them all together. Remember the goal is to make more time to do what you enjoy doing and makes you happy.

4.     Schedule Your Time.  The idea of the first 3 tips is for you to view your life in two parts, essentials and time wasters of your time. Plus what you are unable to do that you want to do, simply because you do not have the time. As you are doing this, you need to focus in on where you can have free time. In order to be successful in getting your free time, you need to schedule it in. As an example, if you have a doctor’s appointment you are not going to miss it because you have it on your calendar. You should have the same mindset when it comes to what you enjoy doing. It doesn’t matter if you use a calendar hanging on the refrigerator or the calendar on your phone, you need to use it for your free time also. This is a must to be able to have time to do the things that make you happy. On your calendar, schedule in whatever activities you want to do that week. These should be the most important appointments on your schedule, it is your life; live it by your design.

5.     Combine. How many days do you have that are scattered? How many days do you feel like you just ran a marathon? Think about your day and see what you can consolidate to save you time in your day. A great example is errands, how many days a week do you spend doing errands? Plan your errands so that you can get them done all in one day or two days at the most. Look at your days and see if there are any other areas that you can consolidate to save you time.

6.     Do You Have a Routine? It is time to rethink your routine. Often times we get stuck in the same routine because it is the way we have done it for years.  A lot of people don’t like change so they stick to the same routine month after month, eventhough it is not how you want your days to be. Is there a more desirable way of doing things? Remember, you create your schedule so build a routine that is more satisfying for you.

7.     Do You Ever Say No? You can’t say yes to everything, if you do then you will never have any free time. Your time is precious and you need to treat it that way. If someone asks you to do something and it will cut into your free time, you may need to say no.

8.     Take advantage of your mornings. Mornings are perfect to take some “me” time, this is because it is the start of the day before you become overwhelmed with your to dos of the day. Starting the morning with an activity you enjoy doing is a great way to get your day started. If you schedule all of the things that you want to do in the late afternoon, you may never have the time to do it. By the time the afternoon comes, you may have added more unexpected items to your to do list and your “you” time will be forgotten. If you take some time in the morning for yourself, then your time will not be pushed to another time or day.

9.     What do you do right after work? This is a good time to do something you enjoy doing. For example, if you want to workout schedule it right after work. This is a good way to unwind after work. If you want to have more time with your family, then use this time for family time or anything else you may find relaxing.

10.    Make Use of Your Evenings. The evening time after dinner and before you go to bed is precious time because this time can be completely yours to schedule. What do you see yourself doing before bed? Reading a book, sewing, scrapbooking, any other hobby, or spending time with your kids? This is time that you should be taking advantaging of every evening.
