Goal Setting: Be SMART When Planning Your Goals

A lot of people, when setting goals for themselves, set unrealistic goals or goals that are just too difficult to reach in their set time frame. For example, lose 40 lbs. in a month. You can lose weight, but you need to set a realistic goal with a plan. Like, incorporate healthier eating habits and exercise into your day while aiming to lose 10lbs this month. Now you have a realistic goal in the number of pounds then you have set a plan on how you will achieve this goal. It is easy to say what you want to do; but in order to achieve your goal, you need to have a plan that will lead you to success in achieving your goal.

Keep your goal planning SMART:

S – Specific: Be very detailed about your goal and how you are going to achieve it, like the example above. Sit down, relax and really think about your goals and the reason why you are choosing these goals.

M-Measurable: How are you going to gauge if you are on track to reaching your set goals? Your goals need to be measurable. Using the example above again, you can keep track of your eating habits and exercising. This can easily be measurable.

A-Achievable: When choosing your goals, do not set yourself up for failure. Goals need to be motivating and challenging, but also doable.

R-Realistic: Your goals need to fit into your schedule or you need to be able to work them into your schedule. You have a higher chance of achieving your goals when you can incorporate your goals into your daily routine. Remember, it only takes 30 days to form a habit.

T-Time: You must set a realistic, achievable time frame for your goal. In your plan of achieving your goal, you need to set mini timelines that will help measure your progress; plus set a deadline that you will have accomplished your goal.

It is easier to stick with your goals when you have a support system in place, this can be your family or a friend. It is always nice to have someone cheering you on or to offer support if you feel like you are falling away from your goals. Take the time to share your goals with a family member or a friend.

You can set and achieve goals anytime. The key to achieving your goals is to be SMART. Start today, plan out your goals and make your own dreams come true!
